Reasons for More Than One Root Canal on the Same Tooth

Just like any other dental or medical treatment, root canals can also fail if the healing process is not as planned or the tooth doesn't respond to treatment. The following are some of the most common reasons why you may need to have additional root canal treatments on the same tooth:

  • There may be an additional canal in the tooth that is not visible during surgery. These canals may be too small or calcified for the practitioner to notice and could remain infected after the initial procedure. The root canal treatment must also be performed on the additional tooth root.
  • An accessory canal can be found in a tooth. This is a tiny area of nerves that is difficult to see on X-rays.
  • It is possible to skip the prevention of salivary contamination.
  • Root canal treatment can cause tooth fractures because the tooth is dried internally.
  • It has been a long time since the temporary filling was placed (provided for short-term seal) and the final root canal treatment (with permanent filled). Numerous studies have shown that it is necessary to place a permanent restoration within one month after any endodontic procedure.
  • The root canal is exposed to bacteria when the patient has a new cavity created in their treated tooth.

Due to different reasons, it is possible to have multiple root canals on the same tooth. A dentist may not be able to see all of the canals on a tooth, as some teeth can have tiny canals or be calcified.

A second root canal may be required within weeks or years. You should contact your dentist immediately if you experience sensitivity to heat or cold, a sharp pain when chewing food, swelling of your gums, or sensitivity to cold.
