In Elden Ring, there are a lot of interesting NPCs who want you to do them a favour or two. These favous are usually requested in cryptic riddles, leaving you baffled as to what you’re supposed to do. Ranni the Witch’s questline in Elden Ring is one of the longer ones, with a few parts that are easy to overlook. By finishing Ranni the Witch’s quest line, you can obtain the Dark Moon Greatsword.
Finding Ranni the Witch
Players will first meet Ranni the Witch after returning to the Church of Elleh in Limgrave early in the game, where she gives them the Spirit Calling Bell. Players won’t see her again until they get in Liurnia, where she may be located in the middle of the three towers, past Carnia Manor, in Ranni’s Rise. Ranni is perched on the apex of the tower.
To join Ranni’s service, you must accept her offer. Then go to the bottom floor of the tower and chat with her three lackeys. Before leaving the tower, you must speak with Ranni one more time. Ranni has asked you to find the treasures of Nokron, Eternal City, and return them to her. She’ll tell you to go underground with another of her associates to investigate the Siofra Well. If you don’t defeat General Radhan, the shardbearer in Caelid, you won’t be able to enter Nokron, Eternal City. His fortification can be found towards the southeast.
When Radhan is defeated, all of the stars he was holding back will reappear in the sky, with one large one crashing into the Lands Between. According to the NPCs who remained after the Radhan conflict, it landed somewhere in Limgrave.
Eternal City of Nokron
The pit is located in East Limgrave, south of the Mistwood Ruins. If you gaze up into the sky, you can see a swarm of drifting rocks. Because the entrance to Nokon, Eternal City is right below those rocks, you can use them as a guide. You’ll notice a spate of floating rocks leading further into the hole when you get there. With Torrent, you can platform your way into the hole. You’ll end yourself in some ruins, and if you keep going, you’ll be jumping across some gothic rooftops.
After navigating the roofs, you’ll come to the Nokron Site of Grace, which is located in a small plaza. A front and slightly to the right archway that looks to lead into a building can be found. Instead, there will be an alleyway that leads to the precipice’s brink. You’ll see a right-hand staircase as you approach it. Continue forward until you reach an area where the boss fog is blocking your path. This is where you’ll meet the Mimic Tear boss, who will imitate your existing outfit and equipment. A simple strategy to defeating this fight is to remove all of your equipment before entering and quickly put it back on after the mimic takes shape.
After defeating the Mimic Tear, you’ll see a bridge travelling north in front of you. Continue along the bridge until you come to a green wooded area on the left. Follow the path down to the left cliff wall, hugging it as you go. A portal with a Site of Grace will eventually appear, leading to more gothic rooftops. To obtain a better view of the area, you’ll have to climb up the side of a structure. You’ll reach an arch with a route underneath after fighting two more mimics who eventually turn into generic opponents.
Enter the church-like structure on the left side. The item you’re looking for, the Fingerslayer Blade, can be found in a chest.

The Ansel River is a tributary of the Ansel
Return to Ranni’s Rise and have a conversation with Ranni. She’ll tell you that your task is complete and that she’s going to sleep. As a result, Ranni’s Rise, the first of the Three Sisters towers in this area, will be opened. Within is Ranni’s armour set, which contains the Snow Witch Hat, Robe, and Skirt. At the top of the tower is a teleport gate that will send you to Ansel River Main, where you will find a Site of Grace straight in front of you. It’s directly next to the Ranni the Witch doll. Pick it up, sit for a time at the Site of Grace, and you’ll be able to interact with the spirits.
The doll will first ignore you, but it will eventually recognise you as Ranni, who was trying to hide from some would-be assassins down in the Ansel River. These assassins must be tracked down and defeated. Follow the river to the south from here. You’ll soon arrive at the Uhl Palace Ruins, where a little river tunnel can be found. Continue until you reach a tunnel filled with huge flying ants. On the right side of the street, there are several gothic structures. Through the entrance on the left, you’ll find the Nokstella, Eternal City Site of Grace.
On your left, there will be a set of steps, and on your right, a ground level route. Follow the river on the ground level walkway to the right until you come to a tiny building with an elevator on the left. Take the elevator down to the Grace Site of the Nokstella Waterfall Basin, which is right in front of you. A cave will appear in front of you, going straight to the invasion fight you must face. The death status effect is inflicted by a group of lizards within the cave, which kills you instantly if the metre fills. You’ll find the Baleful Shadow, who looks like another NPC named Blaidd but isn’t him, if you sprint past them into a red-tinged area.
If you defeat the Baleful Shadow, Ranni will offer you the Discarded Palace Key. Take the elevator from here to the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace, which is in the southeast corner of this region. We’ll need to return later, so turn this on. From here, it’s easy to get to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. The Rennala boss fight took place here, in the Liurnia lake’s centre, at the academy. To the left of the Site of Grace, there is a lockable chest. The Discarded Palace Key is used to unlock this box, which contains the Dark Moon Ring, which we will need later. Return to the Lake of Rot as soon as possible.
The Rotten Lake
Return to Rot’s Lake and descend to the water’s edge. From here, you’re attempting to reach a building to the south. Because you won’t be able to utilise Torrent here, you’ll have to rely on Preserving Boluses or a huge number of Crimson Flasks to maintain your health. There are a few pressure plates between you and the building that pull up platforms on which you can stand, but not enough to create a complete bridge. There is a Site of Grace once you enter the building, so don’t worry about using all of your flasks trying to cross the lake.
The Grand Cloister is a structure teeming with bug warriors of the type found across Caelid. You’ll have to descend to ground level to find a small red river flowing west. Continue up this path for a short way until you reach a stone coffin perched on the edge of a waterfall. You’ll be prompted to enter the coffin, which will take you to the next zone.
You’ll be in a new underground lake region, although this one doesn’t contain scarlet rot and instead has normal water. If you keep going, you’ll come to a boss fight. Your opponent will be Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, a space scorpion-like creature. When the boss is defeated, the Dark Moon Ring will open a sealed passage at the back of the arena. Follow the cave’s path until you come to an elevator, then ride it to the top.
In the Liurnia region, you’ll emerge on a high plateau that can’t be accessed any other way. From where you emerge, walk north up the hill into the Cathedral of Manus Celes. Although the route is simple, you should take Torrent. As you approach the cathedral, a Glintstone Dragon boss will spawn in front of you. You can ride past the dragon inside to a Site of Grace if you’re on Torrent.
To the right, a tunnel runs beneath the cathedral. Because it’s rather dark, you’ll need a torch or light. You must step upon many ledges that lead below to descend the hole.
Continue along the caverns’ path until you come to Ranni’s real body in one of them. You’ll put the Dark Moon Ring on her hand and swear your allegiance to her here. She will advise you to continue your journey to become the Elden Lord, and that when the time comes, you and she will rule together.
When she vanishes, you’ll uncover the Dark Moon Greatsword, a powerful magic greatsword that requires 38 intelligence to wield.
